In a post-match interview, Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca explained his decision to substitute Jadon Sancho at half time during their 2-1 defeat against Liverpool. Sancho, on loan from Manchester United, received his fourth Premier League start for the away game against Arne Slot’s team.
Although Sancho struggled to make a significant impact in the match, there was controversy surrounding a potential penalty claim in the first half. The former Borussia Dortmund player went down in the box after contact with Liverpool right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold, but referee John Brooks did not award a penalty.
After a lackluster first half performance, Sancho did not reappear for the second half and was replaced by Pedro Neto. It was initially unclear whether Sancho’s substitution was due to a tactical decision or a physical issue. However, Maresca later confirmed that it was a tactical move.
“In a tactical move,” Maresca told reporters when asked about Sancho’s substitution.
Maresca’s decision to substitute Sancho seemed justified, as the winger struggled to trouble Liverpool’s defense. Neto, who came on as a replacement, posed more of a threat in the second half but was unable to help Chelsea salvage a point.
Despite the defeat, Neto showcased his attacking capabilities by making purposeful runs and creating three chances in the second half. This performance could earn him a starting role in Chelsea’s upcoming Conference League match against Panathinaikos.
