In a recent interview, former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel defended long-term Chelsea target Victor Osimhen, stating that the Napoli forward is “not a greedy boy”. Throughout the summer transfer window, Chelsea were heavily linked with the 25-year-old Nigerian striker who had been made available by his Italian club. Despite the saga dragging on for weeks, there was an expectation that Osimhen would eventually link up with one of the biggest clubs in Europe.
However, a deal failed to materialize in either situation, leading to Osimhen moving to Galatasaray on a season-long loan deal after being frozen out by Napoli. This move left both parties frustrated at the outcome, with questions arising as to why Chelsea missed out on Osimhen.
Progress on that front has made it to the extent where it has been alleged that Chelsea now shell out an average of £60,000 per week to each player, significantly down from the outgoings during the Roman Abramovich era. Osimhen was allegedly earning in excess of £200,000 per week at Napoli, requiring a compromise if a move to Chelsea was ever going to materialize.
Regarding Osimhen’s character, Mikel stated, “I was involved in trying to make sure that I get Victor to Chelsea. I know what he’s capable of, and I just want to say that it is absolutely not true. Victor is not a greedy boy. He only wants to get what he deserves. And that’s not a problem.” Mikel emphasized his positive relationship with Osimhen since the striker joined the national team, denying claims of greediness.
Looking ahead, both Chelsea and Osimhen will need to assess whether they will re-open negotiations in the future. It remains to be seen if a deal can be reached between the two parties, but Mikel’s comments shed light on the situation and defend Osimhen’s character amid ongoing speculation.
