Slovenia is gearing up to host Austria at Stozice Stadium on Friday evening as part of Group 3 of League B in the UEFA Nations League. Both teams made it to the last-16 stage of Euro 2024, with Slovenia falling to Portugal on penalties and Austria suffering a 2-1 defeat to Turkey.
In the 2022-23 season, Slovenia finished third in Group 4 with six points, securing promotion to League B after finishing on top of Group 3 in League C in 2020-21. Coach Matjaz Kek’s team will face off against Austria and Norway in this international break, followed by matches against Norway and Kazakhstan in October.
The history between Slovenia and Austria is limited, with only four prior meetings. Slovenia has managed just one victory, a 2-0 triumph in their first encounter in March 1997. Austria, on the other hand, have a three-game winning streak against Slovenia, including a 1-0 win in their most recent matchup in October 2019.
Austria progressed to the last-16 of Euro 2024 and were considered dark horses for the trophy after a strong showing in the group stage. However, they have struggled in the Nations League, with three consecutive losses and no victories since a 3-0 win over Croatia in June 2022.
It will be interesting to see how the match unfolds and if Austria can continue their dominance over Slovenia. Stay tuned for the exciting clash between these two teams in the UEFA Nations League.
