After announcing his decision to come out of retirement and join the NWSL expansion team Wave FC, Landon Donovan has been speaking about the challenges he has faced in adjusting to a new league and a new team.
“It’s been a steep learning curve for me,” Donovan said in a recent interview with ESPN. “The level of play in the NWSL is certainly higher than I anticipated, and I’ve had to work hard to earn my spot on the team.”
Donovan, who is best known for his successful career in Major League Soccer and for his time with the U.S. Men’s National Team, admitted that he has had to adapt his game to fit in with Wave FC’s style of play.
“The NWSL is a different environment than what I’m used to, but I’m excited to be here and I’m grateful for the opportunity to continue playing the sport I love,” Donovan said.
Wave FC head coach, Sandra Herrera, praised Donovan for his dedication and hard work since joining the team.
“Landon has been a great addition to our squad,” Herrera said. “His experience and leadership have been invaluable to our younger players, and he brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to the team.”
Despite the challenges he has faced, Donovan remains optimistic about his future with Wave FC.
“I know that I still have a lot to learn and improve on, but I’m committed to doing everything I can to help this team be successful,” Donovan said. “I’m grateful for the support of my teammates and coaches, and I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
