In a surprising turn of events, Raheem Sterling has been left out of Chelsea’s squad for the Europa Conference League playoff tie with Servette. This decision comes after the winger was omitted from the group for the Premier League opener against champions Manchester City on Sunday afternoon.
Head coach Enzo Maresca explained that Sterling’s absence was “a technical decision” and rumors suggest that the 29-year-old has been informed he may not receive regular game time this season. Despite Chelsea’s busy schedule in the coming weeks, Sterling will not feature in the two legs against Swiss opposition.
Sterling is not the only high-profile player left out by Maresca. Ben Chilwell, who has also been told he can leave Stamford Bridge for the right price, finds himself in a similar position. Marc Cucurella’s injury left a potential void for Chilwell to fill, but Renato Veiga has been preferred as cover.
Wesley Fofana, who made his first competitive appearance in over a year against City, will also be rested for the playoff tie. Tosin Adarabioyo, the experienced new signing, has surprisingly not been selected. Axel Disasi and Benoit Badiashile are the only recognized central defenders on the ‘A’ list, with Levi Colwill set to be included on the ‘B’ list later.
Maresca has indicated that Carney Chukwuemeka may need more game time in the upcoming season, hinting at a possible loan move for the struggling playmaker. Despite this, Chukwuemeka is included in the 21-player group, along with 18-year-old Marc Guiu who made his debut recently.
Overall, Maresca will have a mix of first-team players and academy prospects available for the first leg of the playoff tie at Stamford Bridge on Thursday night.
