In a recent development, it has been reported that Barcelona have reached a verbal agreement with RB Leipzig to sign Dani Olmo.
The Spain international, who honed his skills in the Barcelona academy for around seven years before moving to Dinamo Zagreb in 2014, has had an impressive career so far. After a successful six-year stint with Dinamo, Olmo made the switch to Leipzig in January 2020.
Since joining Leipzig, the 26-year-old has established himself as a key player, contributing to the team with 29 goals and 34 assists in 148 appearances. His standout performances also caught the eye during Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, where he scored three goals and provided two assists in six appearances.
Following his stellar displays for both club and country, Olmo has emerged as a top transfer target for Barcelona this summer. Despite encountering initial difficulties with their bids, Barcelona eventually secured a verbal agreement with Leipzig for a fee of €55m (£47.4m), with an additional €7m (£6m) in add-ons.
Barcelona’s sporting director Deco personally travelled to Leipzig to finalize the deal, with Olmo already giving his approval. The attacking midfielder is expected to sign a six-year contract with Barcelona once all negotiations are completed.
As Olmo nears a return to his former club, he has been accompanied by his father Miquel Olmo and agent Andy Bara. He is poised to compete for a spot in Hansi Flick’s side against players like Pedri and Fermin Lopez in the attacking midfield role. Additionally, Olmo’s versatility allows him to also play on the flanks, adding depth to Barcelona’s wide options, which currently include Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, and Ansu Fati.
While Olmo will not feature in Barcelona’s upcoming friendly against AC Milan, there is a possibility that he could be signed in time to participate in the Joan Gamper Trophy match against Monaco on Monday. The imminent arrival of Olmo is set to bolster Barcelona’s squad as they prepare for the upcoming season.
