In a heart-breaking turn of events, Tommy Fleetwood narrowly missed out on capturing a gold medal at the Olympic Games, as Scottie Scheffler emerged victorious in Paris on Sunday.
Fleetwood had been in contention at the top of the leaderboard throughout the competition at Le Golf National, giving him hope of securing the most prestigious title of his career. However, the 33-year-old was ultimately outdone by world number Scheffler, who produced a remarkable final-round 62 to claim the victory by a single shot.
Scheffler’s stunning performance, which included nine birdies with four in a row between holes 14 and 17, proved to be the deciding factor as Fleetwood struggled to cope with the mounting pressure in the closing stages.
Despite Fleetwood’s valiant efforts, Scheffler’s chip sealed the gold medal for him, while Fleetwood had to settle for second place after sinking a putt from around eight feet.
As for the bronze medal, the race was tight with contenders like Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele, who, much like Fleetwood, had started the day in strong contention for the top spot. However, both Rahm and Schauffele faltered in the final rounds, finishing in a disappointing tie for fifth and ninth place, respectively.
It was Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama who ultimately claimed the bronze, delivering a flawless final-round 65 to secure the medal and leave local favorite Victor Perez just one shot behind the podium spots.
