In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United’s pursuit of Gleison Bremer has hit a roadblock as the Brazilian defender has agreed to sign a new contract with Juventus, keeping him at the club until 2029. The 27-year-old, who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford earlier this summer, has opted to extend his stay in Turin despite interest from the Premier League giants.
Bremer, who joined Juventus from Torino two years ago for a fee of around £38m, has been a standout performer for the Italian side. He was named in the Serie A Team of the Year for two consecutive seasons and was voted the league’s best defender during his time at Torino in 2022.
Reports suggested that Manchester United were prepared to include Mason Greenwood in a potential deal for Bremer, but it seems that the player’s commitment to Juventus has ruled out any transfer this summer. Juventus confirmed the contract extension earlier today, with the club praising Bremer’s talent and work ethic on the pitch.
The club’s official website stated, “None of this would be possible without his undeniable talent, which he shows every time he sets foot on the pitch, but his work ethic and commitment are just as important, always putting himself at the disposal of the team and coaching staff every day. And so, we are delighted to say that we are continuing together with Gleison Bremer!”
Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano also revealed that Juventus have adjusted Bremer’s release clause in the new deal, raising it to around £51m. The defender himself had hinted at staying in Serie A for the upcoming season, expressing his confidence in Juventus and manager Thiago Motta.
With Bremer now off the market, Manchester United are expected to turn their attention to other defensive targets. The club has been linked with Bayern Munich duo Matthijs de Ligt and Noussair Mazraoui as potential alternatives. The Red Devils recently signed 18-year-old Leny Yoro, but the youngster is set to be sidelined for up to three months due to a foot injury.
Rumors have circulated that Bayern Munich have received a joint bid from Manchester United for de Ligt and Mazraoui, but the Bavarian club reportedly turned down the offer as it fell short of their valuation. Bayern are open to selling the defensive pair this summer, but they are holding out for a fee closer to £64m in order to agree to any deal. The transfer saga continues as clubs across Europe seek to bolster their squads ahead of the upcoming season.
