In a recent development, Manchester City head coach Pep Guardiola has disclosed that first-choice goalkeeper Ederson was absent during Saturday’s 4-2 friendly victory over Chelsea due to injury.
The victory came after a series of disappointing results in City’s pre-season friendlies against Celtic, AC Milan, and Barcelona. However, the team finally managed to secure a win in Columbus, with Erling Haaland scoring a brace within the first five minutes of the match.
Haaland’s goals were instrumental in City’s success, as he capitalized on errors made by Chelsea’s defense. Despite Chelsea adding two consolations through Raheem Sterling and Noni Madueke, City maintained their lead throughout the game.
Following the match, questions arose regarding Ederson’s availability for the upcoming Community Shield against Manchester United. Guardiola clarified that Ederson’s absence was due to minor injuries and a precautionary measure to avoid any risk.
Guardiola stated, “Ederson had niggles, we didn’t want to take a risk. Yesterday he didn’t train. Today is much better. I think next week will be better but I didn’t want to take a risk.”
With Ederson’s participation in doubt, Stefan Ortega might be called upon to fill in for the goalkeeper position at Wembley. Ortega has previously proven himself as a reliable backup during the FA Cup final against Manchester United.
Despite Ederson’s absence, City could receive a double boost with the return of Bernardo Silva and Kevin De Bruyne to training on Monday. However, other key players like Rodri, Phil Foden, Julian Alvarez, Kyle Walker, and John Stones will still be unavailable due to their international commitments.
Overall, Guardiola remains optimistic about City’s chances in the Community Shield, despite the challenges posed by injuries and player availability.
