In the eighth day of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Great Britain continued to excel, finishing in third place in multiple events and bringing home six more medals from the French capital. Out of the six medals, five were bronze, showcasing the depth of talent in the British team.
The standout performance of the day came from the men’s rowing eights team, who secured GB’s 10th gold of the Games in the morning. The women’s rowing team also put on a strong display, finishing on the podium in their final event.
Other notable bronze medal performances for Great Britain included gymnast Jake Jarman in the men’s floor final, windsurfer Emma Wilson who narrowly missed out on gold, the dressage team, and the 4x400m mixed relay team. However, there was disappointment for Max Whitlock, who finished in fourth place in his final pommel horse event before announcing his retirement.
The pommel horse final was won by Irish athlete Rhys McClenaghan, while gymnastics legend Simone Biles added another gold to her tally in the vault event. Swimmer Katie Ledecky clinched her ninth gold medal, tying the record for the most golds won by a female Olympian. Additionally, Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred made history by becoming the 100m women’s champion, the first athlete from her nation to win an Olympic medal.
In the golf tournament, Great Britain’s Tommy Fleetwood was in contention heading into the final round at Le Golf National. Fleetwood was only one stroke behind leaders Jon Rahm and Xander Schauffele, with Rory McIlroy also in the mix at -10.
In equestrian, just a day after winning team bronze, Carl Hester, Becky Moody, and Charlotte Fry competed in the individual dressage final. Fry, the reigning world champion, qualified in fourth place for the final round, demonstrating the strength of the British equestrian team.
Overall, it was a day filled with excitement and triumph for Great Britain at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, with athletes across various sports showcasing their talent on the world stage.
