Liverpool center-back Joe Gomez is said to be resolute in his desire to stay at Anfield amid rumors of a potential transfer to Newcastle United. The 27-year-old has accumulated 224 competitive appearances for Liverpool since his arrival from Charlton Athletic in 2015. Last season, Gomez featured in 51 matches across all competitions, leading to his inclusion in England’s Euro 2024 squad.
Despite being under contract until 2027, Gomez has attracted interest from Newcastle, Aston Villa, West Ham United, Brentford, and Crystal Palace. Newcastle were reportedly willing to shell out £45m to secure Gomez’s services, with Anthony Gordon potentially moving in the opposite direction for £75m. The Magpies were exploring this deal in order to comply with the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules but opted to part ways with Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson instead.
While Gomez did not engage in talks with Newcastle regarding a transfer, there have been whispers suggesting he could be open to a move. However, The Times reports that Gomez is fully committed to Liverpool and is concentrating on the upcoming Premier League season. The English defender is aiming to establish himself as a pivotal figure under new Liverpool manager Arne Slot.
Last season, Gomez featured in various defensive positions under Jurgen Klopp, showcasing his versatility. Slot can rely on the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Jarell Quansah, and Gomez as his main central defensive options. Additionally, Nat Phillips and Sepp van den Berg have been utilized in preseason, but their future at Anfield for the upcoming campaign remains uncertain.
