In a recent development, Tottenham Hotspur and Argentina defender Cristian Romero has poured cold water on rumors linking him to a move to Real Madrid in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Despite his reputation as a rash and bad-tempered defender during his time with Spurs, the 26-year-old has established himself as a key player for the Lilywhites. Romero first gained prominence while on loan at Atalanta BC from Juventus in the 2020-21 season, before permanently moving to Tottenham, the current Europa League champions.
Having made a total of 98 competitive appearances for Ange Postecoglou’s team, Romero has contributed six goals and one assist. His move to Tottenham was made permanent in 2022 for a fee of £44.3m, and he still has three seasons remaining on his contract in North London.
Speaking about his ambitions, Romero expressed his desire to win a trophy with Tottenham, stating, “I always strive to play at my best. I have a lot of respect for Tottenham. They’ve always given me a lot of support here, so I like playing here. I don’t think about other clubs or their possibilities. I know there’s a lot of talk about a possible move, but I’m calm. At my club I play differently to the national team, more forward. I still have years left in Europe and I want to see where I can go. Hopefully this year we can win a title at Tottenham.”
It seems that Romero’s stance aligns with Tottenham’s plans, as Postecoglou sees him as a vital part of the squad. Real Madrid’s reported interest in Romero has not materialized into a formal bid, with both player and club focused on achieving success together.
While Tottenham has been actively offloading players in the transfer window, including Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, and Joe Rodon, Romero’s future at the club remains secure. The likes of Bryan Gil, Ivan Perisic, Ryan Sessegnon, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Tanguy Ndombele have also been let go, with potential departures of Richarlison, Sergio Reguilon, Oliver Skipp, and Emerson Royal on the cards in the near future.
